REQUIREMENTS FOR U.S. CITIZENS TO OBTAIN A VISA TO ENTER BRAZIL
Leisure travel (sightseeing only)

Scientists, professors, or researchers (who are current University faculty), attending cultural, technological, or scientific conferences, seminars or meeting (services provided must not be paid by organizations/companies in Brazil, except for reimbursement of expenses or per diem allowances. An invitation from the host organization would usually be required.
Participation in artistic or amateur sport competitions, whenever no monetary prize or paid admission is involved. An invitation from the host organization would usually be required.
Please send TDS your current valid and signed passport. It must not expire within 6 months and must have at least one blank visa page. If you do not have any blank visa pages in your passport, TDS can assist you in applying for additional pages. If your passport expires within 6 months, you must renew your passport and then we will secure your visa with the new passport.
Please send 1 (Adult) 2 (Minors) recent professional passport-type photograph (s).
Digital and non-passport photographs are not acceptable.
Please send a photocopy of a round-trip ticket/Itinerary in one's name; or a signed letter on travel agency stationary, with confirmed round trip bookings.

If traveling by land, a notarized bank letter concerning the balances in one's bank accounts, signed by the bank's manager, as proof of financial capacity to pay for one's stay in Brazil;
If the visa application mentions "visiting friends or family" please provide a letter of invitation from the host in Brazil.

Persons making short visits to religious organizations, churches, missionaries, or humanitarian organizations in Brazil, should present a letter from the church or institution responsible for organizing the trip.
The letter should explain what the group is going to do in Brazil, the name and contact information of the institution they will be visiting and what kind of volunteer assistance they will provide (brief or incomplete explanations are usually rejected, causing delays).

Proof of residential address in the United States; clear copy of applicant driver’s license or state issued photo ID. Parent's ID can be submitted for children. Address on the document must match address on the visa application form.
A clear enlarged photocopy or scanned copy of your drivers license or ID is recommened.
Any application that shows “self-employed” or “unemployed” must be complemented with a current “Balance Account Bank Statement” with applicant’s name and address.
Applicants entering/leaving Brazil by land must provide a “Balance Account Bank Statement”. Feel free to blackout the last 4 digits of the balance account number.
Travel Authorization for Minors Form (Notarized). A person under 18 years of age not traveling with both parents or legal guardian(s) must provide a notarized letter of consent signed by the non-accompanying parent(s) or guardian authorizing this Consulate to issue a visa.
A Notarized copy of the minor’s birth certificate or, as applicable, the guardianship document, is also required.

The Brazilian consulates have introduced a web-based visa application form. To fill in the on-line form select “Visa Request” and follow the steps. Every question must be answered. Print a copy of the completed form, and include it with the materials sent to TDS for processing. The Houston consulate will only accept web-based application forms. No other forms will be accepted. Please Complete and sign One application.
Application receipt for minors must be notarized and signed by both parents.

Visa is usually valid for entry within 90 days of the issue date, and then becomes valid after the first entry, for multiple entries for a further ninety days to five years.
If it is not used within 90 days of issue date, the visa automatically expires. The period of stay in Brazil, of each entry, may be between 30 days and three months (no more than six months stay during any 12 months period).
Persons who are visiting friends or conducting activities other than sightseeing may be issued a more limited visa, valid for entry for only 30-90 days, for a stay of up to 30 days.
The specific validity of each visa - 30 days, 90 days or 5 years for entry, or 30 days, or 90 days stay - is determined solely by the Consulate and cannot be changed.
International Certificate of Vaccination for yellow fever is required if arriving in Brazil within 90 days of visiting any area of an infected country.
